This guide will show you how to burn video files to DVD using free tools. (These tools have been around for awhile, but still work).

Download and Install The Following Tools Now

AVI2DVD - (Perform a FULL install)

7-Zip (In case you do not have an unzip program, install and use this program to unzip a file)
Purpose
You have Video files such as AVI, DIVX, WMV, MKV, OGM, DVD IFO Files, or MPEG files and you want to burn them to DVD.
Procedure

For the sake of being organized, create a Folder on your hard drive and name it "Movies." (e.g. c:\Movies).

Start AVI2DVD. Figure 1

Click on the Load AVI/OGM/MKV/WMV button and select a video file you want to burn to DVD. In this example, I will use an AVI movie file. Figure 2

Click on the Step 2 Output tab and ensure the following: Figure 3

DVD or SVCD radio button is checked.

Choose Disk Size: DVD-5 4.7GB
-
Aspect Ratio: DVD2AVI will automatically determine this for you.

Audio Bitrate: 384
-
Make ISO: Make sure this is checked.
-
Name: Enter any name you like.
-
Pal NTSC Conversion: Leave this setting alone.

Click on the Select Destination folder icon and point this to the folder you created in Step 1. Figure 4

Click on the Step 3 Encoders tab and select the HCEnc encoder. Under Profile, choose: BEST. Under Matrix, choose MPEG. Figure 5

Click on the Step 4 Subtitles tab. Unless you have a subtitle text file, skip this. Figure 6

Click on the Step 5 DVD Menu tab. If you want to create a background image for your DVD (optional), see the video. It is much easier to show that process than explain the steps here. Figure 7

Click on the Add Job button. You should see the job added. Figure 8

The HCenc Endoder transcodes (prepares) the movie file so that it can be burned to blank DVD-R. Figure 11

OPTIONAL – While you are waiting for the transcoding process to finish, you can capture images of the movie that will be placed on the DVD menu you can create. To do this, click on the Capture Images button. Figure 12

OPTIONAL - Look for a section in the movie you want to take a Snapshot of and then click the Take SnapShot button. You may skip this step and proceed with Step 17 Figure 13

OPTIONAL – Click on the Save SnapShot button to save your snapshot. You may skip this step and proceed with Step 17 Figure 14

OPTIONAL – Give your SnapShot a name and save it. You may skip this step and proceed with Step 17 Figure 15

When the Transcoding process is complete, DVD2AVI will alert you. You should have an image file inside c:\Movies\AVI2DVD_TMP. The file will be an ISO DVD_Image file. Figure 16 and Figure 17

Now, all you have to do is burn the transcoded file to DVD. To do this, insert a blank DVD-R into your DVD burner and then start the ImgBurn program. Figure 18

Click on the Write Image File to Disc button. Figure 19

Navigate to the c:\Movies\AVI2DVD_TMP folder and select the DVD_Image ISO file and click the Open button. Figure 22

ImgBurn starts burning to DVD-R. Figure 24

Note: ImgBurn will recycle the DVD in your burner (eject it and then re-insert it) during the burn verification process. So don't be alarmed.

When the burning process is complete, ImgBurn will eject the burned DVD and alert you that the process is complete. Congratulations, you have successfully burned a movie file to DVD-R that will play in your DVD player! Figure 25
